Nanni Moretti
Michele has been abandoned by his wife and finds himself alone with his son Andrea. He lives in a little apartment in Rome, and wonders about certain aspects of life... Among his friends, Fabio is planning once again to put on an experimental theatre performance. Despite all sorts of difficulties and extravagances, the opening night arrives and the performance takes place. But everyone still has their troubles...

Nanni Moretti's first feature, Io Sono un autarchico is not a narrative film, but a film of characters, where the ensemble dimension is very present. The characters carry the story, a story which revolves around their three main preoccupations, that is to say politics, theatre and self-awareness. Io sono un autarchico chrystalises most of the ideas of the director at the time. The themes already show real maturity, although Moretti produced the film himself, which shot in Super8, the format of amateurs. "I don't have the cult of the anguish of shooting, but for this film the shoot was the most tiring. It was no longer a question of asking friends to give me a day or two of their time. The group putting on the performance had to commit for a long period of time. I was very determined." (Nanni Moretti)
