Born in 1966, Athina Rachel Tsangari graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in filmmaking, after studying literature in Thessaloniki and art in New York. She founded the Cinematexas short film festival in 1999 and set up her own production company, Haos Film, in 2005. Her first feature film, Attenberg (2011), was screened at Premiers Plans. Harvest was presented in competition at the latest Venice Film Festival.
