Lyonya's life was ordered and without surprises until his world is turned upside when the only factory in the village closes. Looking for a job, he has to make a choice for the first time. Which way will his life go? He becomes a regular visitor to the local job centre and tries his hand at various jobs: selling shoes on the market, plastering... Turning down offers one by one, Lyonya finally accepts a position as an apprentice in the crew repairing the road not far from where he lives... and finds an old school friend, Khryusha, and falls in love with her. But in work as in love things do not go as he would have hoped...

Boris Khlebnikov was born in Moscow in 1972 and graduated from the VGIK in 1997. In 1994, during his studies, he co-directed his first documentary film, Mimokhod, with Alekseï Popogrebski. In 2001, he shot The Cunning Frog, his first drama short. In 2003, he once again worked with Alekseï Popogrebski, co-directing the feature Koktebel, which won several international prizes. Svobodnoe Plavanie is his first solo feature.
