"Hell is other people" said Sartre. No other phrase could sum up the idea of the film better. In En Angel Exterminador (The Exterminating Angel), Buñuel films impediments, stumbling blocks, without sacrificing the need to explain situations rationally, a standpoint he also takes in Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie) "Liberty is a ghost. I seriously thought that and I have always thought it. It is a phantom in the mist. Man pursues it, thinks he has caught it, and all he has left in his hands is vapour". (Luis Buñuel) The Buñuel of later years appears significantly in this film. The camera movements are more frequent and more supple, sticking perfectly to the mysticism of the film. Two of Buñuel's faithful collaborators too part in this major film: scriptwriter Luis Alcoriza (who wrote Los Olvidados (The Forgotten), and the director of photography Gabriel Figueroa.
