"I wanted to make a neo-realist film in colour, and with humour, since humour is lacking in De Sica's style. I drew from Ozu as well in my manner of telling the story – establishing a distance between the camera and the characters, with no close ups. Afterwards, I realised I had also been influenced by Douglas Sirk and Edward Hopper." (A. Kaurismäki) "It is a film of contained fury, built upon the absolute indignity of a social situation, and the absolute dignity of those caught within it." (J.M. Frodon) "There's some Buster Keaton in Kaurismäki's films, particularly in the rigor of his pared-down directing that makes each detail meaningful. (...) Behind the refusal to rely on long dialogue, the film's economy of words and gestures, is a genuine generosity and sense of solidarity that doesn't need to be underlined.
