The film is set in and around Leningrad between 1937 and 1945, during the repression then the war. Sonia, a naive, young working-class girl, is employed as a servant in an excentic, Chekovian family of intellectuals, poets and musicians where she discorvers a world alien to her own. After committing a faux-pas at a family reunion, she is punished by an illusory lover.
