Born in Paris in 1975, Dyana Gaye $studied cinema at the University of Paris 8. In 1999, she won the Louis Lumière- Villa Médicis Hors les mursgrant for her first short, Une femme pour Souleymane. Following that she made several other shorts, which were selected for several festivals and won a number of awards, such as Dewenetiin 2006 andUn transport en commun (Saint Louis Blues)in 2009.Des étoiles (Under the Starry Sky) is her first feature.
"I am part Souki and part Malick, two characters from Un transport en commun (Saint Louis Blues), my previous film. Souki went to her father's funeral while Malick was getting ready to emigrate to Italy. I wanted to extend this idea of travelling, trajectories in an existence. I really started from youth in movement and exile; I also had a specific desire to work on a female character, so Malick became Sophie. [...] The idea was not to identify a particular African or Senegalese identity, but rather to grasp a certain movement, and here movement and circulation are the principles of invention. All this is a reflection of who I am: I cannot resign myself to saying I am just Senegalese or just French; I am the confluence of both, with a bit of Italy thrown in! It is difficult in cities today to imagine that you are just made up of one culture, there are a multitude of interactions created by successive migratory movements, creating, above and beyond mixed cultures, forms of contamination".Dyana Gaye
