The mid-80s saw Dario Argento develop his activities as a producer. Already associated in 1978 with George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, for which he developed a European version with music by Goblin and tighter alternative editing, Argento played an active role in the production of Demoni (Demons) and its sequel, both directed by Lamberto Bava, Mario’s son, in 1985 and 1986 respectively. Bava and Argento’s Demons aimed to rival Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series. This fantastic diptych of special effects, a colourful sound and light show, saturated with rock music and shock scenes, happily takes on its Guignolesque aesthetic. (Olivier Père; arte.tv)
