Of the four film adaptations so far, Stephen Frear's remains the most faithful to Laclos' original work. The film takes into account all the perversion of the novel by including the epistolary dimension and the autobiographical narrative of the character of Merteuil. "I didn't want to make a political film in the strict sense of the term, but rather a film on the politics of human relations. With such a text what counts are words and faces" (Stephen Frears). In this respect, the film has an outstanding cast, made up entirely by himself. "Nobody put me under the slightest pressure. The Americans behaved like perfect... gentlemen!", said Frears.
