In parallel to a career on stage, TV and in film, in 2013 Xavier Legrand made his first short film, Avant que de tout perdre, which won the Audience Award for French Short Films at the Festival Premiers Plans in 2012. Nominated for the Oscars in 2014, the film won several awards, including the César for Best Short Film, also in 2014. Jusqu'à la garde (Custody) is his first feature.

“Fear is at the origin of
Jusqu'à la garde (Custody). Fear brought about by a man who will do anything to find the woman who wants to separate from him and escape his extreme violence. The character of Anthony, played by Denis Ménochet, is a constant threat to those around him, putting pressure on them all the time. All he feels is his own pain, and he is prepared to manipulate anyone, including his own children. Women who have suffered conjugal violence, like the one played by Léa Drucker, are always on alert, they know that the danger can come out of nowhere, at any time, and spare no-one” (Xavier Legrand).
