For his first feature-length film, "it might seem surprising that Kaurismäki chose one of the classics of literature, for which any adaptation is by nature hazardous. But as Kaurismäki likes to say, ‘if you're going to fail, why not fail dramatically?' (...) Kaurismäki underlines that any film adaptation of a literary work presupposes deleting aspects of the original. In this way, for Crime and Punishment, he was obliged to "do away with the psychology and focus only on the action, to put together dramatic sequences" and eliminate "Raskolnikov's monologues and small talk, because no one is able to know what goes on in the mind of a man like Raskolnikov."
