The genesis of La comunidad (Common Wealth) was a challenge from Álex de la Iglesia to his producer: to write a suspense film in a unique setting, a run-down building in Madrid. Each floor of this building seems to correspond to the different genres that make up this horror comedy. The film opens with a parody of a sitcom: "The film gets off to a false start. Because it's all a lie. What we wanted to show is this false idea of happiness in which we all live" (Álex de la Iglesia). With the discovery of the neighbour’s dead body and his loot, the plot veers towards thriller and horror, mixed with satirical elements, ending with action scenes that hark back to the Burtonian world of Batman (1989) or Edward Scissorhands (1990).
