As if to close a loop, Cet obscur objet du désir (That Obscure Object of Desire) picks up the central theme of L'Âge d'or (The Golden Age): "the story of the impossible possession of a woman's body", Buñuel himself said. Cet obscur objet du désir is his last film, made when he was 70 years old. "After Le Fantôme de la Liberté (The Phantom of Liberty), I thought about retiring once and for all. It took all my friends' stubbornness, mainly Silberman's, to get me back to work." For this film, Buñuel brought together his most faithful collaborators, with Jean-Claude Carrière for the screenplay and Fernando Rey in the lead role. In one sense, the actor portrays the director's alter ego, giving the film an extra dimension: a work on maturity, the story focuses on an old man, destroyed by the untameable youth of a woman.
