There are at least three stories running alongside each other in "Ask Ölümden Soguktur". The Hollywood A star is born story, or how Belgi, a young gypsy who sings and dances in seedy cabarets, end up a star. Then there is the melodramatic story of tragic love, or how Belgin is estrange from, and fights against the passion which ties her to Ali. Finally, the mythical story of Istanbul, a city torn between East and West, a city where the respect women owe to men and to tradition is coupled with a desire of emancipation and independence. Three stories and more, for a complex film which is not afraid of multiplying the ways of observing the heroine. By calling her film "B. Love is colder than Death", Canan Gerede is doing more than just simply borrowing a title from Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Liebe ist kälter als die Tod) : she shares with him the conviction that "love is the best, most insidious and most efficient instrument of social oppression".
