Critically acclaimed actress Thea Barfoed has gone through turmoil which has resulted in a divorce and the loss of custody of her two boys. She now wants to break with the past, regain control over her life and get her children back. Her ex-husband Christian is quickly persuaded by her tough and manipulative but charming personality and she must prove to both herself and him that she is capable of getting her life back on track. As Thea is up against the rigorous demands of stage life and a past that haunts her, she must face her inner demons while clinging to the goal she has set for herself.

Martin Pieter Zandvliet was born in 1971 in Fredericia, Denmark. He is a self-taught director and writer and first started out as an editor working on documentaries. His first film as a director, Angels of Brooklyn was chosen for various festivals including Toronto Hot Docs. After that he did serveral shorts, as a writer and director. Applause is Martin Pieter Zandvliet's first feature film."For me Applause is about betrayal. About how we as human beings betray the ones closest to us, when we ourselves have been betrayed. About having difficulties trusting other people and judging what is right and wrong. About the complexity of longing for something better. About reacting extremely egocentric or extremely helpful, about varying between despondency/discouragement and spite. All in hope of being seen, heard and loved" Martin Pieter Zandvliet
