Eight-year-old André's world is turned upside down just before Christmas. While he is asleep, his father leaves for no apparant reason. He lives alone with his mother, and he suffers when she starts up a relationship with one of her colleagues. His schoolmates constantly make fun of him, and Susanna, his mother's best friend, moves away. That is when Nikolai, a neighbor of Russian descent, becomes the young boy's friend...

Born in Coimbra in 1971, Catarina Ruivo studied editing and graduated from the College of Theatre and Cinema in Lisbon. She worked on the documentary Largo by Pedro Sabino, and the films A Mulher Policia by Joaquim Sapinho and Mal by Alberto Seixas Santos. In 1998, she directed and edited the short film Uma Cerveja No Inverno. Andre Valente is her first feature film. She is currently working on the screenplay for A Monte to be directed by Alberto Seixas Santos.
