2009 Fiction 2h08
Ander is in his mid-forties, and is a farmer living in the middle of nowhere in Biscaya with his sister Arantxa and their ageing mother. His life is monotonous and all he does is work, whether it is on his farm or in the neighbouring factory. While Arantxa is preparing to get married and leave Ander to take care of their mother, he breaks his leg and has to stay in plaster for two months. To help him with his work the family hires José, a Peruvian immigrant worker. The newcomer soon shakes up family relations.

Born in 1973 in A Coruña, Spain, Roberto Castón studied Spanish philology at the University of Santiago de Compostella and qualifed as a cinematographer from the Catalonia Centre for Film Studies. He has made several shorts: Ilusión óptica (2001), La pasión según un ateo (2004), Maricón (2005) and Los requisitos de Nati (2007). Ander is his first feature. He has also been the director of the International LGBT Film Festival in Bilbao since its first edition in 2004. Ander is an initiative of BERDINDU, the Basque Office for Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals,Transsexuals and Intersexuals. "Even if LGBT films are slowly beginning to be produced in Spain, almost none of them take into account the issue of social integration, and none of them are set in a rural environment. Because the human relations described are simple and a bit crude, Ander is a film which is carried by the actors. The economy of narrative resources and technical effects makes it possible to stress the intensity of the relationships between the characters.
