Director Michael Arias talked of his reaction when he discovered the manga Tekkon kinturito in the 1990s: "One of my friends and me were watching the massive demolitions sites on the other side of the street. He had a big collection of manages and I asked him to recommend some to me. He gave me one straight away. When I saw the first picture, showing two boys contemplating the city, perched on a telephone pole, I had a shock: it was us! The atmosphere in Tokyo at the time was very strange. There has been poison gas attacks in a nearby neighbourhood and there were three helicopters constantly patrolling above us I had the feeling that the ground was disappearing from under our feet. I like the way the story of Tekkon kinturito questions our vision of the future, our convictions and what really counts for us. These themes seemed very anchored in reality".
