"Protazanov was more concerned with the society of "wartime communism" and Gussev, the happy, smiling revolutionary hero, than he was in the Martian society which represented the decadent bourgeoisie. We find out that, in fact, no voyage to Mars has taken place at all. In this imaginary part of the film, the settings and costumes give the film the sophisticated aesthetic of a fantasy film." (J. Siclier) Aelita was backed up by a massive publicity campaign and large financial support, the original idea being to produce the first "monumental" Soviet film for the general public.
