1984 had already once been adapted for cinema by Michael Anderson in 1956. It was a resounding failure, so much so that George Orwell's widow refused to allow the film to be projected after its copy rights ran out. One of the conditions she imposed before allowing a new version was that it was in no way to be futuristic or use special effects. "I tried to walk the thin line between satire and parody, and tried to make clear that Orwell wrote about a totalitarian world derived from the one in which he lived. The film shouldn't be a pseudo-documentary about what could have been the case had a totalitarian power invaded Great Britain." (M. Radford)
