Les Habitants

Raymond Depardon
2016 - France - 1h24

From Charleville-Mézières to Nice, from Sète to Cherbourg, Raymond Depardon set up a small film studio in his caravan. He invites people he meets on the streetss to continue their conversations without limits.
From 2004 to 2010, Raymond Depardon travelled all over France to photograph it. This experience let to an album (La France; Seuil) and a desire: to capture the voices of the many conversations he heard. In all, Depardon filmed in 15 cities without them being named specifically in the film so as to give a unity of vision throughout the country. “The period at the time allowed us to expect political and social statements. But it was quite the opposite. Les Habitants is a portrait of a private France, between Maupassant's short stories and bar-room tales.” (Florence Aubenas; Le Monde)
