Paris, 1942. During the occupation, rich, attractive 40-something Robert Klein, takes advantage of French Jews by buying works of art they are forced to sell at a low price. One day he receives a copy of a Jewish newspaper with his name and address on it. He is concerned by this and looks into it. He finds out that his name is on the lists at the Prefecture. Another Robert Klein exists. He goes in search of his homonym.
It was only towards the end of the 60s that French cinema began to take an interest in Vichy France, and notably one of its darkest episodes, the Vel' d'Hiv' Roundup. Written by Franco Solinas, one of the great Italian scriptwriters (Salvatore Giuliano,La battaglia di Algeri (The Battle of Algiers)), Mr. Klein has all the obsessions of American director Joseph Losey, a victim of the Hollywood witch hunts of the 1950s. A portrait of an oppressive and destructive system, the world described is all the more fascinating as it is on the border between the documentary and fantasy. The investigation carried out by Mr Klein takes the form of an inner journey questioning his identity.Alain Delon, who carried the film as both actor and producer, has one of the greatest roles in his career.
