It is the start of the new school year in a provincial secondary school. Life is back to normal, with rowdy behaviour in the dormitory, the usual punishments, recesses, stormy study rooms and conflicts with the administration. One evening, the boarders decide to free themselves from the authority of the adults and start a revolt.

Zéro de conduite tells the story of a conspiracy hatched up by four teenagers (Caussat, Colin, Bruel and Tabard) to fight off their boredom and rebel against authority at the official party of a provincial boarding school. This is a film about
childhood, shot by a child who has been given a film crew and studios. Chaotically edited and totally disjointed, the narrative is sometimes hard to follow (but that doesn’t really matter, and it doesn’t get in the way of understanding the story). It is a monument to the glory of disobedience, culminating in the sequence where young Tabard tells authority where to go. That said, despite its pronounced pithiness, the director’s various views on morality, authority and religion (as well as his unequivocal evocation of paedophilia) show a confounding sharpness and a boldness which has rarely been equalled.
