José de la Colina, co-writer of a book of interviews with Buñuel, said that it was with Los Olvidados (The Forgotten) that Buñuel's cinema was "reborn", following a period of almost 15 years during which he had not made anything "personal". When the film was released, the Mexicans criticised Buñuel of painting a black picture of things, whereas the French communists, who were very closely connected to the director, accused him of become bourgeois. Despite this the film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951, where he won the award for best director and the international critics prize. Originally Los Olvidados was inspired by Vittorio De Sica's Sciuscia (Shoe-Shine), which films street kids from Rome. Impressed by its darkness and realism, Luis Buñuel composed his film around this model.
