1951 was a very active year for Buñuel since he made three films. La Hija del Engaño (The Daughter of Deceipt) is a remake of a Spanish film shot in 1935, that was produced by Buñuel. The film is inspired by a work by Carlos Arniches, which was highly appreciated by the Spanish public. The two scriptwriters "Mexicanised" the subject making the character more macho than intrepid. Despite the character's bitterness and the fatalism of his destiny, Buñuel often manages to take the film to lighter register: Don Quintin's two acolytes are made fun of and are presented as two fall guys, leaving the possibility in the film for burlesque and optimistic sequences.
