"Paranoids can be the most reasonable of people ... as long as you don't put your finger on their weak spot" (Luis Buñuel). For Buñuel, the ambiguities of the characters curiously converge with the ambiguities of his own personality. "This is possibly the film that I have put the most of myself into. There is a part of me in the protagonist". This film is emblematic of his Mexican period, El (This Strange Passion) is one of Buñuel's most accomplished films, as much in terms of directing as in technique. This result is no doubt due to the work of Gabriel Figueroa, Buñuel's loyal director of photography. He was trained by Welles' and Eisenstein's director of photography, and would leave an indelible mark on Buñuel's films, imposing above all a style: the symbiosis he creates between painting and photography earned him the nickname of "the fourth muralist".
