E la nave va…
Federico Fellini
In July 1914, in the port of Naples, the ocean liner "Gloria" is about to set sail for the island where famous singer Edmée Tetua was born and whose ashes are to be scattered at sea. On board the ship are Orlando, a journalist, as well as numerous officials, friends of the deceased and several artists. The crossing is peaceful, punctuated by improvised shows put on by the prestigious passengers. On the way, the ship picks up a group of Serbian refugees on the run. Shortly afterwards, an Austrian battleship claims the men from the crew.

E la nave va… (And the Ship Sailed On) tells us how the ashes of the greatest singer of all time (La Tetua, inspired by Callas) are scattered. But the story that interests Fellini most deeply is that of the funeral of the society attending La Tetua’s funeral. The upper middle classes who board Fellini’s immense ship come from the last century and have no future: that society is sinking. But it is in their unawareness and blindness that each of them is moving towards catastrophe, because the link with reality is lost here (as the anti-realist set strongly suggests). (Frédéric Strauss)
