"I have always admired this novel which filled the surrealists with enthusiasm through its climate of passion, through its all-consuming crazy love. I have always loved this story where love is both intimacy and destruction". (Luis Buñuel) While remaining faithful to the novel Buñuel sprinkles his film with motifs from dark and gothic literature, a form that Buñuel paid much attention to. Furthermore, Buñuel transposes this typically British novel into a Mexican setting. Emily Brontë's absolute romanticism becomes coarser and more social: the conventions of the time, the impossible, cursed union are all elements that Buñuel approaches head-on, unlike William Wyler's film adaptation.
