It is likely that the enthusiasm aroused by Petit paysan (Bloody Milk) when it was presented at Cannes Critics’ Week was mainly due to the fact that it focused on a character who doesn’t feature much in French feature films: the figure of the farmer. Hubert Charuel knows what he is talking about, himself being the son and grandson of farmers. His film is shot on the family farm, with his parents and grandfather playing small parts – this rootedness brings an undeniable truth to the description of places and gestures, especially as Swann Arlaud (excellent, as always) seems to have immersed himself perfectly in the role.
