Review of the 7th Ateliers d’Angers
Jeanne Moreau has finished running the 7th Ateliers d’Angers, from 23 to 31 August, which welcomed 8 young directors as residents preparing their first fiction feature. She was accompanied by cinema professionals, notably directors Delphine Gleize (Cavaliers seuls, La Permission de minuit…), Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg), scriptwriter Vincent Poymiro (Tehilim by Raphaël Nadjari) and producer Karl Baumgartner (Pandora Film).
Several professionals were invited to speak on production, scriptwriting, directing and editing:
* Actress and director Jeanne Moreau presented François Truffaut’s Baisers volés.
* Director Delphine Gleize presented two of her features, La Permission de minuit and Carnages with her editor François Quiqueré.
* Greek director and producer Athina Rachel Tsangari presented Attenberg and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth. German producer Karl Baumgartner was alongside her for a masterclass on production.
* Scriptwriter Vincent Poymiro presented Yasujirō Ozu’s The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice.
There were public screenings of the following films (at the Cinémas Les 400 coups):
* La Guerre est déclarée by Valérie Donzelli, with the director and lead actor Jérémie Elkaïm present – première screening.
* Pardevant notaire by Sophie Bruneau and Marc-Antoine Roudil, with Sophie Bruneau present.
* Mafrouza by Emmanuelle Demoris.
* La Langue de Zahra by Fatima Sissani, with producer Farid Rezkallah present.
During the week, the Ateliers d’Angers also welcomed 201 participants who took part in the masterclasses free of charge, and also in several classes which this year focused on creative documentaries:
- Louis Mathieu, cinema teacher, Sophie Bruneau, Belgian filmmaker, Jean-Marie Barbe, founder of the Lussas Festival, came to give ideas on the way documentaries question the frontiers of reality.
- A focus on documentaries in the Pays de la Loire was an opportunity to discover, in the presence of their directors and producers, works currently in progress.
- For the first time, an audiovisual production workshop, run by filmmaker Xavier Liébard, enabled 17 people, in 6 teams, to make a short documentary film.
- For the 5th year in succession, 6 directors or scriptwriters from the Pays de la Loire took part in a documentary writing seminary run by Anne Huet.
Finally, the 6th Short Film Night at the Château d’Angers brought in more than 300 spectators.
Almost 2 000 people took part in the 7th edition of the Ateliers d’Angers.
The Ateliers d'Angers are organised by the Association Premiers Plans (President: Yves-Gérard Branger / Managing Director: Claude-Eric Poiroux) and supported by the Ville d'Angers, the Média programme of the European Commission, the Conseil Régional des Pays de la Loire, the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles (DRAC).
